Baby Blue sweetens up debut with “Sweet Talking Sugar” MV release

MNL48’s first sub-unit Baby Blue has released their long-awaited music video for their debut single “Sweet Talking Sugar” today, September 17. But before its fans here in the Philippines witnessed the said music video of the song, its Japanese supporters took on first dibs as the music video of the 3-woman sub-unit, consist of Jan Elaurza, Coleen Trinidad and Amy Isidto, was first released through EGGS, the digital music subscription platform of Tower Records Japan, one of the collaborators of the project, and in Gyao, Yahoo Japan’s video streaming site.

Plan C’s Carlo Manatad took the director's seat for the music video. Manatad, whose list of directing projects for the idol group include the music videos for “Palusot Ko’y Maybe” and “365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel” and its documentary film, “ICYMI: I See Me,” said that they drew influence from 90’s R&B groups in making the music video while modernizing its vibe to give the trio a “balance of swag” but keeping the idol charm that the fans loved.

Elaurza added that during the music video’s pre-production, she was happy regarding the director’s choices in several key elements, including the colors needed to emphasize each of the members including herself. “There were scenes that our director did some drawings. As an art enthusiast, it caught my attention. I’m also very happy with the colors that they chose for me. They put me on a red light which describes my dark aura to pink and violet theme which shows my kawaii side. Same with the other girls,” she said.

On the other hand, the members of the sub-unit said that they prepared a lot for their music video, including the vocals and the choreography.

Trinidad said that she even practiced her facial expressions while taking care of her appearance in preparation for the day of their shooting. “Everyday I practice our dance choreography before the day of our MV shoot as well as practicing my facial expressions in front of the mirror. I take care of my skin and my body and make sure I will look nice on the day of our shoot,” she said.

For Elaurza, it is the projection of each member that needs to be shown in the music video is important hence listening to the song is a great way to get a feel of it as well as to build confidence in front of the camera. “Personally, I’m listening to the song almost every day to get the feeling and to project it right during the shoot because for me, the most important thing is confidence that should be seen in the camera so it will impact greatly to the audience,” she said.

With all of these preparations, the members of Baby Blue are excited for the music video and wants to share the same excitement to their fans. Isidto emphasized that the “chill and artistic” vibes in the music video will be enjoyed by the millenials. “The feel in our music video gives out more “vibin’” feeling and very R&B that everyone will like it especially the millennials,” she said. Elaurza also shared the same sentiment, saying that she is confident in it. “I'm confident to say that it will suits to your taste. You will definitely enjoy watching it,” she said.

Trinidad also expressed her excitement saying that their fans would also love the music video’s unique concept. “I got so excited to show it to everyone already because it has a different concept that I think a lot of people will love. Expect it to be a bit different from what we usually do in MNL48. It has a bit more swaggy feel in it and shows our different personalities,” she said.

HalloHallo Entertainment Inc. and Tower Records Japan are planning to hold a national promotional tour for the sub-unit across Japan once the Covid-19 pandemic is over.

“Sweet Talking Sugar” is still available for streaming in EGGS, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
